"Be curious, not judgmental"

-Walt Whitman

They say don’t judge a book by its cover.  And then one day some enlightened individual decided to convert this statement into a beautiful metaphor.  This individual decided to use this beauteous sentence to teach someone he or she belittled but deeply cared about.  It would be a life lesson for this lucky person even though he or she might of thought it was a petty statement.  But was the lesson ever fully taught?  Let me answer that for you.  Absolutely not.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.  A  classy connotation for do not judge another by appearance, an enthralling lesson with so much meaning.  But there is way more truth to a  metaphor about judgment using books.  It is indispensable that the saying is analyzed thoroughly.  There are individuals out in the world that start reading books and stop due to lack of interest.  Lack of interest is a broad way of saying these individuals obtain unfavorable feelings for what they have so far read.  Reading books and reading people go hand in hand.  Some books and people appeal to only certain people.  Every book and person have parts that really define their image.  Okay, so you get a little taste of the book from reading parts… but does that mean you know the entire book? No.  What if you read the entire book?  This is the breaking point of the metaphor.  You can’t read an entire person.  BUT But but… the metaphor is still hanging together by a thread.  If you read the entire book, do you now understand all of its underlying meaning? No!  The author who put that beautiful piece together had thoughts and hidden themes that sometimes none of the story’s audience catch.

Who are people to judge people?  Who are people to judge anything?  Human beings need to to stop restricting themselves from opportunities to enhance their knowledge due to their judgment.  We thrive off of curiosity yet we limit ourselves to what we explore.  Walt Whitman summed this message up into four words and if you asked me I’d say he did a pretty great job.  Be curious, not judgmental.  But what do I know?  Just as much as you.  Nothing.  And that is the mentality that we must attempt to maintain. As long as we always know nothing, we will always stay on track in the curiosity department.  Inescapably, wiser we become.
